“I understand the need to find yourself, find your family… I simply said: Frances, this is your grandpa, Jim. But he thought grandpa sounded too old so he gave himself a new name: Jimpa.” Kismet down in Australia has unveiled the first official trailer for a lovely film about family called Jimpa, which premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. It’s the newest film made by the Australian filmmaker Sophie Hyde (following Good Luck to You, Leo Grande) and has no US release set yet. Jimpa will have its Australian premiere as the Opening Night film at this year’s Adelaide Film Festival in October. Hannah and her non-binary teenager Frances visits her gay grandfather Jimpa living in Amsterdam. Frances expresses a desire to stay with their grandfather for a year, challenging Hannah’s parenting beliefs and forcing her to confront past issues. Starring John Lithgow as Jimpa, Olivia Colman as Hannah, Aud Mason-Hyde as Frances, with Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Kate Box, and Daniel Henshall. “With warmth, humour and joy, Jimpa reminds us that, in every family, there are stories that don’t add up.” I’m very happy to be quoted in this trailer from my Sundance review. I still think it is a wonderfully warm, tender, worthwhile film… Enjoy.
Here’s the first official Australian trailer for Sophie Hyde’s film Jimpa, direct from Kismet’s YouTube:
Jimpa is an uplifting multi-generational family story starring favourites Olivia Colman & John Lithgow. Hannah (Colman) travels to vibrant Amsterdam with her non-binary teen, Frances (Aud Mason-Hyde), to reconnect with her politically-engaged, gay father—affectionately known as “Jimpa” (Lithgow). Frances is besotted with Jimpa and announces they wish to stay with him for a year – to Hannah’s apprehension. Jimpa is fiercely independent, so it is a shock when his declining health is revealed, upending Frances’ plans and bringing Hannah’s sister in from the UK. As the siblings negotiate what happens next, Hannah must confront her past & stories she has told about her family. Jimpa is directed by acclaimed Australian filmmaker Sophie Hyde, director of the films 52 Tuesdays, Animals, and Good Luck to You, Leo Grande previously, plus many other short films. The screenplay is written by Sophie Hyde and Matthew Cormack. Produced by Liam Heyen, Bryan Mason, Marleen Slot, Sophie Hyde. This initially premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year (read our review). The film opens first in Australia coming up after playing at the 2025 Adelaide Film Festival. No US release is set – expected in early 2026. Who’s interested?
